Microsoft customers weigh Vista pros and cons, 22/05/2008 (www.itpro.co.uk)

Two Microsoft customers espouse the business benefits of Vista, but say the new OS doesn't necessarily add value.

The message that came across from Tube Lines and public sector user, Newham Borough Council was that the latest Microsoft operating system offered good functional improvements from a central management and security point of view. Click to read more...

Newham U-turns on Vista, 22/05/2008 (www.theinquirer.net)

NEWHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL has revived the rollout of Microsoft's Vista operating system that it suspended last year after learning that council business would grind to a halt if it used the software.

The East London council said today that it was trialling a "limited rollout" of Vista to see if the council could cope with it after all. Geoff Connell, acting IT director of Newham, said in a statement: "We are working toward a full rollout of the new operating system next year." He said Vista would give the council productivity benefits over its existing operating system, Windows 2000. But he did not specify what those benefits where, nor how much the rollout would cost. Experiencing migration pains? The move to Vista need not be so difficult, 07/02/2008 (www.computerweekly.com)

Barely a day goes by when someone I am speaking to or swapping e-mails with does not moan about application compatibility issues with Microsoft's Vista platform.

Worse still, we are having Windows Vista forced upon us whether we like it or not, which spells all kinds of problems for home users and businesses.

User concern has seen major names in the PC and laptop world, such as Dell and HP, offering downgrades from Vista to XP. Typically this response has been in the form of offering XP Pro recovery discs to those who request one, which can be used to revert a Vista machine to XP Pro. Click to read more...

The development double-helix answer to Vista upgrade headaches, 14/01/2008 (community.zdnet.co.uk)

Certain breeds of Vista upgrade or migration testing solutions (and in particular those that can accommodate testing of non-MSI applications) appear to favour the option to build new virtualisation modules that will fingerprint application DNA and highlight those applications that are suitable for virtualisation under Microsoft's Softgrid. This seems like a logical move – as many will know, MSI is the standard file format for distribution of apps in a Windows environment (kind of like the same thing as RPM for Linux), so a stripped back to the core approach makes sense.
