Making Application Compatibility Happen...
Welcome to this end-of-year edition of DNA, our newsletter for the application compatibility and migration community. And what a year 2009 has been! We saw a huge uptake of our AppTitude product as corporate IT strategies began to fully embrace the opportunities offered by the new Microsoft Windows 7 OS and the promised advantages of virtualization.

This edition includes all the latest from the world of App-DNA.......great news on customer wins, the launch of our unique Effort Calculator tool, selection for significant proof-of-concept (POC) engagements in collaboration with Microsoft, and announcements of two key, strategic partnerships. Welcome though all these are, the achievement that says most about App-DNA’s progress is that we have just passed the milestone of helping more than one million customer seats plan their migration onto new platforms.

On behalf of the whole team, I would like to thank our customers and partners for a truly exciting 2009, and offer my best wishes to you and your families for the holiday season.

» One million customer seats – and many more to come

We are excited to report that we have just passed a significant milestone in the history of the company – App-DNA has now helped over one million customer seats plan their migration onto new platforms. We are confident that our installed base will continue to grow, with both partners and customers recognising the strategic benefits of deploying AppTitude as a powerful and efficient way of de-risking applications migration.

Recent project successes include selection by an international oil and gas giant with over 80,000 users, and a global defence company that is currently undertaking one of the largest deployments of Microsoft App-V. We have also been successful in winning business from three high profile UK government agencies and a large UK food retailer.

In financial services, we have been selected by a major US insurance company and three of Canada’s top financial institutions, and now count 50 percent of the top worldwide investment banks as our customers.

» Take the guesswork out of Windows 7

Back in October we launched the new and unique Effort Calculator feature within AppTitude to provide answers to important questions ahead of migrating applications across to the Windows 7 platform. While earlier versions of AppTitude tell you which applications need work to run properly in the new environment, the App-DNA Windows 7 Effort Calculator in AppTitude V4 helps determine real answers to how long will it take and how much it will cost?

So far, customers and partners have been hugely enthusiastic about the tool, and it has already been deployed in a number of migrations. The Effort Calculator is unique because it uses raw data generated by AppTitude that is already specific to your organization. Take a sample of your application portfolio and Effort Calculator will show you:
  • Which applications will migrate easily
  • Which applications will need remediation
  • What scale of remediation is required
  • The cost and time required for each fix
  • The cost and time for entire migration
Effort Calculator is built-in to AppTitude V4, and provides a detailed and granular view of your Windows 7 migration challenge, straight out of the box. And the more you tune it to your own operation (how many testers you have, how much you pay them, the burdened labor rate etc), the more precise your cost and effort forecast will be.

“Many enterprises are wary of OS migrations because of the potential disruption to business services and the unknown implications of fixing them,” says Paul Schnell, Chief Technology Officer of App-DNA. “Thanks to the unique capabilities in the new Effort Calculator feature, they know in advance where the problems will be and what the fix options are. And, because the Effort Calculator uses data generated from their own applications tested in AppTitude, they already understand the real cost and resource issues and can plan accordingly.”

» Windows 7 POC engagements continue to grow

As 2009 draws to an end, we are pleased to report a very positive situation for our Windows 7 POC program, an area in which we work closely with Microsoft. Organizations around the world are waking up to the benefits of migrating their entire desktop environments to the new OS. To de-risk the migration, however, many of them want to start by conducting a POC (proof-of-concept) pilot to understand the application compatibility issues they are likely to face. App-DNA and Microsoft fully support this approach and have developed a joint POC initiative. With over 40 POC programs in 10 countries now in-hand or completed, our expertise is helping prepare major users for the deployment of Windows 7. The latest customers include two UK ‘institutions’; a national broadcaster and a global telecoms provider, as well as two US based; a broad based Health Care company and a large manufacturer of Windows & Doors.
» App-DNA and Citrix sign global agreement

Pre-sales specialists from leading virtualization vendor Citrix now have access to the application compatibility testing features of App-DNA’s AppTitude product, thanks to a new global agreement between the two companies. Despite the compelling operational, environmental, cost and performance benefits offered by virtualization, customers want to first understand the risk factors of the overall migration program before committing.

By using AppTitude’s features during the all-important pre-sales phase, Citrix specialists can rapidly present an accurate insight into application compatibility in order to de-risk future deployments. AppTitude determines which applications are unsuitable and which need further testing, providing a solid foundation for accurately assessing the cost and schedule impact of the migration program – and helping to favorably position Citrix virtualization.
» App-DNA joins Microsoft Systems Center Alliance

Our excellent working relationship with Microsoft has become even stronger with the announcement of App-DNA’s appointment as a full partner in the Microsoft Systems Center Alliance. This network has been established to share expertise and opportunities among leading companies that develop solutions based on Microsoft platforms. Membership of the Alliance brings a number of practical benefits that include an improved online presence, business development and technical support, priority access to showcase events, and approval to issue joint solution briefs.

Samit Patel, Head of Technology Solutions for North America at App-DNA commented, “This is fabulous news for App-DNA and our customers. Joining the Alliance as full partners demonstrates our credibility and the endorsement by Microsoft of our product strategy, systems and processes. I am confident that, in turn, the benefits we get will inevitably lead to better services for our customers.”
